York Art: According To Mcgee

Location

The Hatted Man passes the microphone over to Sarah ‘Space Ace’ Bolwell to perrorate at length over one of York’s edgiest art hot spots: According to McGee that is! Established in 2005, According to McGee has consistently ran spiky exhibitions and looselimbed art sessions. Featured in the Guardian (‘provocative exhibitions’), Hotel Du Vin magazine (‘The McGee gallery is unique’), and, ah, GNER Magazine (‘Art Jamming at According to McGee is the best way to finish the working week’), the white cube in the centre of York continues to disgorge the best art from the North. And – get this, Northern line luvvies – The ArtSpace is the first outlet to sell the increasingly celebrated ‘Northern Line’ T-Shirts! A serendipitous match made in heaven. The Northern Line has found a foot hold in York’s most contemporary art rook.

In light of the recent surge of people joining the Facebook group ‘Secret York’ I thought it apt to highlight one of the most exciting gems of York city centre. ‘According to McGee’ opposite York’s second most recognisable landmark – Clifford’s Tower (or next to Ali G’s takeaway if you navigate the city via its fast-food institutions) provides an outlet for all you frustrated creative people who, like me, can’t manage to find the enigma that is Wentworth Studios.
Whether it’s just a dollop of culture you crave or you want to put that sketch pad you got for Christmas to good use, According to McGee provides the answer. The work of nationally, indeed internationally recognised artists frequents its walls and its Life Drawing sessions in satellite studios around York allow your repressed inner Picasso to come to the surface. Shows by 1960s legend Douglas Binder, Indian born Amrik Varkalis (recently interviewed in The Daily Telegraph), and ex-Miner Harry Malkin have helped put the centre of York in the spotlight as a place for muscular contemporary Art.
Life Drawing runs from 7:15pm to 9:15pm, Friday nights. Contact According to McGee 01904 671709, ails@accordingtomcgee.com for more details
ps How HOT does my boyfriend look in my newly purchased ‘Northen Line’ t-shirt? Go for a size smaller, people. Sexy stuff.
